Mattress protectors: why use one, and which to choose
A stain voids the manufacturer’s warranty and the 100-night exchange. The 3 Excelsior protectors, the right fit and what their warranty covers.
At Bon Sommeil, a mattress protector isn’t required: it’s sold separately, and you can bring your own. We still strongly recommend one. Here’s why, and how to choose among the 3 Excelsior protectors we carry.
Why use a mattress protector
The reason is simple: a stain on the mattress voids both the manufacturer’s warranty and the 100-night comfort exchange. The manufacturer’s warranty, 5, 10 or 15 years depending on the model, is void if the mattress is stained, soiled or unsanitary. And a stained or soiled mattress cannot be exchanged.
The Québec legal warranty always applies: your rights under the Consumer Protection Act are never excluded. But a single spill can be enough to lose the manufacturer’s warranty and the exchange. That’s what the protector is for.

The Stay Cool and Summit toppers are each designed to help you feel cooler, in their own way: the first by wicking moisture away, the second by dispersing heat. Their patented zipper lets the topper zip off for care. If you don’t sleep hot, the Invincible does the protection job. If you sweat at night, look at the Stay Cool. If heat is what bothers you most, the Summit. Note that the Summit isn’t available in Twin.
Standard fit or deep fit?
Each protector comes in 2 fits, at the same price. The right fit depends on the height of your mattress:

Watch out for the Ricardo: at 11¾ in, it’s just over the standard-fit limit. On each mattress page, the right fit is chosen for you.
The Excelsior warranty, and how it connects to your mattress
The 10-year Excelsior warranty covers:
- Stains on the protector, if they remain after washing.
- Manufacturing defects in the protector.
- Stains on your mattress, if the protector is bought at the same time as the mattress, from the same retailer.
In other words, when you buy it with your mattress from us, the Excelsior protector also covers stains on the mattress itself for 10 years. Bought later, it still protects the mattress, but that coverage for stains on the mattress doesn’t apply.
Conditions: report the stain within 14 days, wash the protector according to the care label and use it at all times. Bleach, normal wear and commercial use are not covered.
Excelsior also gives you 30 nights to try the protector: if you don’t like it, Excelsior refunds the suggested retail price, with proof of purchase. That trial is Excelsior’s own; it’s separate from the 100-night comfort exchange on the mattress, which offers no refunds.
Care
Machine wash the protector according to the care label. After a spill, wash and dry it as soon as possible: it’s a condition of the warranty. On the Stay Cool and the Summit, the topper zips off.
