Firmness and size: how to choose your mattress

Sleep position, feel, size, price: a simple way to find your place in the collection before you try mattresses in store.

When you choose a mattress, 2 decisions matter more than any other: the feel (what most people call firmness) and the size. They’re also the 2 hardest to judge on a screen. Here’s a simple way to find your way through the 5 Bon Sommeil models, made in Québec in a factory in Laval, before you lie down on them in store.

Firmness is compared, not measured

“Firm,” “balanced,” “contouring”: these words only mean something when you compare mattresses with each other. That’s why we place our 5 models on a feel scale specific to the collection. It isn’t a standard; it’s a guide that tells you which direction to go.

From firmest to most contouringFeelTopHeightOn display
LevisFirmerTight top9 inNo, sold rolled
RicardoFirmTight top11¾ inYes
ImpulsionBalanced, more responsiveEuro top10½ inYes
EssentielBalanced, soft surface feelEuro top11 inYes
LegacyContouringHybrid Euro top14 inYes

One thing stands out: the 2 firmest models have a tight top, while the other 3 have a Euro top, a comfort layer sewn on top. Height doesn’t follow firmness: the Ricardo is thicker than the Impulsion and the Essentiel, and yet firmer.

Your sleep position: a starting point

The way you sleep points you to a first model to try. It isn’t a rule, and certainly not a diagnosis: it’s simply where to start before you compare.

  • Mostly on your back or stomach, and you like a flat surface: start with the Ricardo, the firmest of our display models. Want a little more give without sinking in? The Impulsion has a balanced feel, with a more responsive surface and less sinkage.
  • On your side: the Essentiel has a soft surface feel without a “dip.” Its 850 coils are zoned: firmer in the middle of the bed, softer at the shoulders.
  • You like to sink in a little and feel the mattress hug your shoulders and hips: try the Legacy, the most contouring in the collection.
  • You’re not sure yet whether you prefer firm or soft: the Essentiel is the model we suggest trying first. From there, move toward the Impulsion for a more responsive feel, or the Legacy for a more contouring one.
  • You share a bed: all 5 models use pocket coils. Each coil moves on its own, which helps reduce motion transfer. If that’s your priority, the Legacy is the one to consider.

Our Find yours quiz combines your sleep position, the feel you’re after, your size and your budget in 4 questions, and suggests a model to try.

How to judge firmness in store

  • Really lie down. Not 30 seconds perched on the edge: lie on your side or your back, like at home.
  • Take around 10 minutes per model. Your advisor gives you space, with no pressure.
  • Compare 1 or 2 other models on either side of the one you like on the scale: the contrast tells you whether you want firmer or softer.
  • The Levis isn’t on display. To get a sense of its feel, try the Ricardo, the firmest of our display models.
  • If you share your bed, it’s best to try mattresses together.

The 5 sizes and what they do to the price

Bon Sommeil mattresses come in 5 sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Double, Queen and King. The Levis is available from Twin to Queen, but not in King. To choose, start from your current bed: the size of your base or your old mattress. If in doubt, check it with us in store before you buy.

SizeLowest priceHighest priceModels available
Twin$349 (Levis)$849 (Legacy)5
Twin XL$419 (Levis)$1,019 (Legacy)5
Double$439 (Levis)$1,069 (Legacy)5
Queen$499 (Levis)$1,199 (Legacy)5
King$799 (Impulsion)$1,539 (Legacy)4

Mattress prices, before taxes. The step between 2 sizes isn’t the same for every model: going from Queen to King adds $150 for the Impulsion, $190 for the Essentiel, $220 for the Ricardo and $340 for the Legacy. Every model’s price in every size is on the Compare page.

Size also changes what comes next

  • Stock: common sizes are in stock at all 3 stores. Allow 7 to 10 days for a size not kept in stock.
  • Take it home or have it delivered: all 5 mattresses come rolled and fit in most cars; store pickup is free the day you buy, depending on stock. Delivery to your bedroom is free on orders of $879 or more, otherwise $60, within 30 km of one of our stores.
  • Mattress protector: the fit depends on the mattress height. Standard fit up to 11.5 in (Essentiel, Impulsion, Levis), deep fit up to 16 in (Legacy, Ricardo). See, for example, the Invincible.

And if, after a few weeks, the feel isn’t right? From night 30 up to night 100, you can exchange your mattress once for another model in the range ($79 transport fee, plus any price difference; no refunds under the comfort exchange program).
